There’s Pansy hate in her tag and I just can’t so here have a rant. The post is one of those 30-day Potter challenge ones, with “Least Favorite Female Character.” I’m not going to reblog said post because I don’t want to cause unnecessary drama, but here’s what it said:
Okay can we agree that everyone’s leas favorite female character was Pansy Parkinson? I mean does anyone like her? She flirted with Draco (who didn’t even like her) and she was mean to everybody and just no.
AHEM.
- No we cannot agree on such a thing because hey some people actually really like Pansy Parkinson. Plenty of people, in fact.
- Where are you getting your information from, exactly? Draco didn’t like her? Oh, yeah, that’s why he asked her to the Yule Ball when he probably could have asked anyone else he wanted to in fourth year. That’s why they seemed to be romantically involved throughout fifth year and into the beginning of sixth until he became so preoccupied with the mission to kill Dumbledore and ended up pushing her away along with everyone else because he didn’t want her to see how much this mission was destroying him. Draco Malfoy cared for Pansy Parkinson in some amount and don’t you dare try and say otherwise.
- Yes, she was a bitch. But have you even considered what kind of environment she grew up in?
- Pansy was taught from a young age that being a Parkinson and being pureblood made her better than anyone who wasn’t a pureblood. She was probably taught that she was better than most of those, too.
- She was also very likely taught to see other girls as competition. Because in that sort of society, she was expected to marry someone rich and influential and have his son and that’s about it. Her worth was very, very likely defined only by the friends she made and the boy she dated.
- Also let’s face it teenage girls are mean, and I doubt Harry Potter was the only one who called her a “pug-face” that can ruin a girl’s self-esteem and people deal with that in different ways. Pansy put others down in order to raise herself up. I’m not saying it’s a good thing to do, but everyone is flawed and it’s honestly forgivable in my book.
- SPEAKING OF FORGIVENESS. People seem to forget that Draco Malfoy regularly sent people to the Hospital Wing because he liked throwing hexes around. And once he was a part of the Death Eaters he did far worse things than loudly demean someone’s appearance and yet people still love him. HMM I WONDER WHY THIS IS??
- Literally the only reason we never get to see anything redeeming about Pansy Parkinson (other than her UNFAILING LOYALTY TO THE PEOPLE SHE CARES FOR) is because JKR was literally using her to get back at her own childhood bullies. Astoria Greengrass exists only because JKR hated Pansy too much to give her a nice ending.
J. K. Rowling has said that Pansy did not end up marrying Draco because Rowling always hated her: “I loathe Pansy Parkinson. I don’t love Draco but I really dislike her. She’s every girl who ever teased me at school. She’s the Anti-Hermione. I loathe her.” Taken straight from Pansy’s wiki page: [ x ]
tl;dr: Pansy Parkinson is a fucking Queen who yes has some flaws like every human being and people still love her character so damn it don’t tag your hate.
